Summary: In course of last two decades, sculpture has become field of intense creative activity. The modern Indian sculpture had to reach the present state through travails spread over near about century. The modernists who came into the scene in the '40s revolted against the practice of mimicking the visible world in the art of their predecessors. But they also, as this film underlines, themselves fell prey to mimicking linguistics and stylistics of the western avant-garde. However, there were some individual achievements. It was Ramkinkar Baij, the almost forgotten loner of the '40s, who became a potent factor in the resurgence of sculptural activities in India on a new plane. This film does a quick survey of the main trends of modern Indian sculpture, while highlighting the achievements of more significant artists of each trend.
