Based on the book by Jawaharlal Nehru, the film documents, through Nehru's eyes, the various elements that make up the social, cultural, political and economic history of India. Divided into four sections - Ancient (the Indus Valley Culture and the Vedic people); Classical (Sangam period in South India the classical age of the Guptas, Harshvardhana , the Bhakti movement and the Cholas); Medieval (Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals, ending with the coming of the British) and Modern (the birth of nationalism, coming of Gandhi and ending with the events of 1945).
