Summary: An autobiographical on Kakasaheb alias N. V. Gadgil, a freedom fighter and
a minister in the Union Cabinet, Gadgil's father worked as a porter and then
as a clerk in the railways at Malhargarh. Soon after his mother's death he was
sent to Siddhatek and then to Pune. As a young boy, Gadgil revered Tilak but
later he came under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi. Several times he
served prison terms. Kakasaheb was instrumental in building the Congress
Bhavan in Pune. As a minister in the Union Cabinet just after independence, il )
he skilfully handled the flood of refugees pouring into India from Pakistan. He devised a master plan for Delhi and built several colonies for the refugees and the Government employees. In 1957, he voluntarily retired from the Governorship of the Punjab and came back to Pune to serve poor people.
