Summary: 1955 - YEAR IN RETROSPECT: On January 26th, 1956 India completed her sixth year as a Republic. In the east, the Durgapur Barrage was opened to develop Bengal and Bihar, Completion of the Konar Dam under the Damodar Valley Corp. The Canada Dam will help irrigate vast tracts of land in West Bengal. The Manchkund hydro-electric project started generating power, jointly sponsored by Andhra and Orissa. In Malabar, the Malampuza project will bring thousands of acres of arid land under cultivation. Kandla port on the West coast was expanded. Larger railway network across the country Integral coach factory at Perambur in Madras, Chittaranjan Locomotives in West Bengal in full steam. Road communication in Assam extended to NEFA, Indian aviation taking rapid strides. Expansion of telephonic communication. Indl. front has made good progress. Many foreign dignitaries visited India. India playing very crucial role in international politics and peaceful coexistence. Progress achieved on cultural and sport fronts.
