Summary: An artistic journey is the journey of Indian painting from the classical Ajanta
to the modern, via the period of oblivion during the British rule and the
Revivalist movement, beginning the Bengal school pioneered by
Abanindranath Tagore and his students. Nandlal Bose consolidated the first
gains of reawakening while Rabindranath Tagore embarked on his own
agreements. The contemporary movement was pioneered by Paris trained
Amrita Shergil, N.S. Bendre, K.K. Hebbar, Binod Bihari Mukherjee, Nirode
Mazumdar, etc., later strengthened by M.F. Hussein, F.N. Souza, Akbar
Padamsee, Gaitonde, Krishan Khanna, Jehangir Sabavala, Swaminathan,
Satish Gujral, Bhupen Khakkhar, Tyeb Mehta, Vivan Sundaram, Ganesh Pyne, Arpita Singh, and several
others having their individual styles. The modern Indian painting is an artistic
hope.
