Director: Anirban Mahapatra
Summary: A short documentary on musicians Alex Jurain (French) and Sukanta Basu (Indian), and their Azarak Project, a work in progress which attempts to capture the musical essence of a utopian tribal society from Alex's childhood dreams. The project is inspired by the idyllic environment of Santiniketan, a rural Indian town 200km from Kolkata (Calcutta), where the duo currently live amid a tribal population in a native Santhal village. The Azarak Project is founded on a unique sonic language called Azarakian, invented by Alex and Sukanta. The arrangement for the songs are based on a variety of ethnic musical instruments, such as the Indian esraj and the Australian didgeridoo. Stylistically, their music is a fusion of oriental and occidental traditions.
