Ten years after partition, this collaborative adventure across nation made and language fault-lines brings together influencers of Free Cinema,
IPTA and
PWA in a manner only possible through the medium of cinema. Based on Manik Bandopadhyay's 1936 Bengali novel
Padma Nadir Majhi, the 1958 Urdu film adaptation is set on the banks of the River Meghna in the village of Saitnol near Dhaka. The screenplay, lyrics and dialog are a first for
Faiz Ahmed Faiz; music is by
Timir Baran and photography by
Walter Lassally.
Tripti Mitra and
Khan Ata feature among a cast of amateur actors and locals, and
Zahir Raihan and
Santi Chatterji are assistant directors.
A film whose attempts at being seen - so that we may experience it's unchanged story of fishing communities, it's Ray style neo-realism, it's oddness of language and now impossible kind of collaboration - have been historically censored - from its initial release (because of communist affiliations of cast and crew) to its rediscovery and restoration in the present.
