Summary: Muslim melodrama set in early 20th-C. Lucknow. The young doctor Yusuf (A. Kumar) loves Najma (Veena), daughter of a nawab. As Yusuf's family is not aristocratic, they cannot marry. Their respective marriages within their own class do not solve the problem. Mukarram (Kumar), Najma's husband, meets with an accident and is injured on his way to killing Yusuf, and Yusuf performs a miraculous operation saving Mukarram's life. This peace is restored between the two families. This was Mehboob's debut as independant producer under his own banner.
Thesis 1 DON'T WAIT FOR THE ARCHIVE. What else can be cast or thrown are dice. The entry of contingency into the play of forces. The dice are askew. They haven't landed properly. Is this a property of the archival image , that it doesn't fully "land" on some meaning or value, is somewhat ungrounded, askew, indeterminate. How much does this have to do with the archive as surface of inscription, bumpy ground.
