Summary: Amidst fierce Qawali competitions, a poor poet/singer, Aman Hyderabadi, falls in love with Shabnam, the daughter of Police Commissioner Khan Bahadur. After Aman is humiliated by Bahadur, Shabnam and Aman elope and travel to Lucknow, where Aman changes his name to Kamal Lucknowi and hopes to earn a living by singing. But his voice gives him away and soon he will be hunted by a friend-turned-foe, Inspector Shekhar, who is determined to arrest him.

In Barsat Ki Raat (1960), poet-singer Aman has come to Hyderabad for a broadcast on the All India Radio; but he is not sure what he should sing. At a moment of such an artistic block that night, the hero takes shelter from the rains in the shop of Dinu, a local smithy.
A woman runs into the shop with the same purpose. Due the downpour and the dark, she does not notice Aman. But startled by the sudden flash of a lightening, she clings to him for a brief while. And then embarrassed, the woman dressed in a white sari quickly moves away. Both look at each other but do not speak. Soon she leaves, disappearing into the night.
Inspired by the incidence, Aman sings the next morning:
Never in my life will I forget that rainy night,
The night of the meeting with a beautiful stranger
...the night of magic…
…the night of the pari of my imagination
