Summary: The comical story of hapless, orphaned, Bachelor of Arts, poor tenant, Shantaram, who must travel all the way from Poona to Bombay; then to Hyderabad and finally to Vasai to pick a suitable groom for his neighbor, Krishna Apte, the second of three daughters of retired school-teacher, Apte. It is at Vasai that they will find Kamlakar Varde, who will agree to get married to Krishna for the agreed dowry of 5000 Rupees plus expenses. While Kamlakar and Krishna have both fallen in love, Apte must deal with selling his house, belongings, jewelery, etc. to pay for the dowry, as well as try and meet new demands of the groom, his father and their relatives.
