Summary: Ravi, the central character in the film, is a second-year M.A. student, staying in a 'vatara' sharing a room with his colleagues. A young lady, Lakshmi, living all alone with a young boy, captures the attention of Ravi right from the beginning. She enchants and intrigues Ravi. There is a touch of mystery about her and Ravi sets out to 'detect' and probe but steadily invading and enveloping his consciousness. Her many faces take him by surprise. Lakshmi too is seeking and searching for the vanished dream of her childhood in the personality of Ravi. Ravi moves closer to the completion of his studies. By now Lakshmi's supremacy over his heart and mind is complete. But yet Ravi and Lakshmi are failures in their respective pursuits. If Ravi fails miserably to understand Lakshmi and reconcile the apparently opposite traits in her character, Lakshmi too flops because of her inability to break away and rise above the limitations of traditions that bind a housewife. The first part of the film is a moving commentary on this Ravi-Lakshmi encounter and how it unfolds, with Lakshmi ultimately going back to her husband. Now, the scene shifts to a remote town. Ravi seeks his fortunes there as a lecturer in a local college. Lakshmi is out of his sight, but not out of his mind. She continues to haunt him. Nandini, a girl student of Ravi always stays away from the classes due to her mother's illness and Ravi somehow gets a hunch and suspects she may be Lakshmi's sister. In this 'search', Ravi discovers Nandini. Nandini, his student is also slowly attracted towards him. If Lakshmi was a captive of traditions, Nandini curiously is under the sway of her brother-in-law whose very shadow fills her with fright. When Nandini is caught in the grip of this psychological tension, Ravi comes to her rescue. He provides Nandini with a zest and hope for living. But like the Lakshmi-Ravi relationship, the Nandini-Ravi relationship also turns out unsuccessful. though by now he is more mature in man-woman relationship, he fails in his affair with Nandini. Though towering in her intellectual stature, Lakshmi could not rise above the limitations of traditional family ties. In like manner, Nandini too, though fails to free herself from the pressures of her environment, and devotion to her mother. This defeat which wrecks the lives of Lakshmi and Nandini, is in a sense, the defeat of Ravi too. He fails in his brave attempts to rescue both from the vicious circles they are in. And, the film Akramana comes to a finish just when Ravi, after these two failures, makes one more renewed bid to face the realities of life.
